Professional experience

since 2024 Independent consultant for bioinformatics and molecular genetics.
2019 - 2024 Geneticist, bioinformatician, and molecular biologist at the Praxis für Humangentik, Vienna, Austria.
2009 - 2019 Assistant Professor at the Molecular Ecology Group, University of Innsbruck, Austria. Involved in the whole field of Molecular Ecology, including next generation sequencing, the development and application of genetic markers, evolution, phylogeography and population dynamics of European metazoan species, symbiosis research, and bioinformatics.
1996 - 2013 Volunteer at the Vienna Red Cross. Emergency paramedic, commander and consultant scientist of the CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats) recovery group.
2006 - 2009 Research associate at the Department of Forest and Soil Sciences, University of Natural Ressources and Life Sciences (Boku), Vienna, Austria. Involved in the Austrian Science Fund project ´Multiple Wolbachia infection in the Cherry Fruit Fly Rhagoletis cerasi and their potential application for biological pest control management´.
2006 Staff scientist at the Department of Genetics, Federal Research and Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape, Vienna, Austria. Development of molecular markers for forest seed certification.
2003 - 2006 Research associate at the Institute of Forest Entomology, Forest Pathology and Forest Protection, Boku. Development and application of a broad spectrum of molecular methods (e.g. DNA extraction, PCR, cloning, enriched libraries, hybridization techniques, fragment analysis, SSCP) in entomology. Isolation of microsatellites, collection and analysis of phylogenetic data.
2003 Six months project assistant at the Austrian Red Cross head office, Department of Disaster Relief. Evaluation of structural damages after the 2002 floods in Austria and development of mathematical models for the distribution of relief funds.
1996 - 2003 Staff scientist at the Plant Biotechnology Group, Institute of Applied Microbiology, Boku. Establishment and maintainance of plant tissue cultures. In vitro, greenhouse, and field trials in plant virology, detection of viruses and mycoplasmas by ELISA, tissue print, and PCR. Virus elimination by meristem culture. Development and implementation of the working group's web presentation.
1988 - 1996 Freelancing team member at the Plant Biotech Lab, Department of Life Sciences, Austrian Research Center Seibersdorf. Virus detection and elimination in potato, study of plant-pathogen interactions using the chestnut blight fungus - chestnut tree - system. Training and applied work with various radioisotopes.
